Programs Are the Heart of AKA

i Feb 9th No Comments by

Heart_FlowersFebruary is the month of LOVE.  A month in which we show our love for our spouses, partners, children, friends and sometimes, even strangers.  It’s a month where we celebrate kindness, generosity and the gift of giving because we LOVE.

As the members of Nu Iota Omega express our LOVE for one another. We also celebrate our LOVE for our International Programs–for, they are, the HEART of Alpha Kappa Alpha.  Rendering “service to all mankind” would be quite challenging if we did not have our programs to guide us in service.  As we move throughout the month of February, we must:

  • LOVE Educational Enrichment as we mentor ASCEND students, collect One Million Backpacks and ThinkHBCU.
  • LOVE Health Promotion as we focus on Alzheimer’s Disease and Caregiver Support, Stroke and Heart Disease Prevention and Mental Health and Wellness.
  • LOVE Family Strengthening as we help end Childhood Hunger, collect Seasonal Wraps and provide Financial Fitness awareness.
  • LOVE Environmental Ownership as we educate and sustain the world through AKA 1908 Playground Project and Acts of Green.
  • LOVE Global Impact as we implement Global Education and Engagement through the United Nations of the United States of America and Education and Nutrition Initiatives in Africa through Africare.

Nu Iota Omega has been challenged to implement these five programs that will impact the world.  We LOVE, SERVE and HELP people in our communities.  It’s what we do!

Alpha Kappa Alpha: A Serious Matter for 107 Years

i Jan 15th 2 Comments by

Today, Alpha Kappa Alpha women across the world are celebrating 107 years of sisterhood and service to all mankind.

Founders' Day 2015

Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded on January 15, 1908, on the campus of Howard University. The intimate group of women who founded our organization, just one generation removed from slavery, realized that they were in a pivotal position by being college trained women of color. It was the desire of the group that their college experience would be meaningful and productive.

107 years later, the vision of our founders is alive and well! The service programs of our organization through the years have been relevant and effective in meeting needs of our global society. Under our current international program initiative, Launching New Dimensions of Service, Alpha Kappa Alpha women around the world are implementing innovative and essential service projects that address the needs of our youth, family health, and global concerns.

As we take time to reflect on our legacy of 107 years of sisterhood and service, we ask that you take a few moments to reminisce with our chapter and international organization by visiting and After you’ve had the opportunity to peruse our websites, please take a moment to think about how you can render service to your local and global community.

Each year more than 250,000 women in the U.S. die of heart attacks, many not knowing the ways women’s symptoms differ from men. Forty percent (40%) of heart attack victims die before they reach the hospital.

The campaign encourages women to carry aspirins in their purses to use in the event you are suffering from a heart attack. The sorority will also be giving away small handbags with aspirins and information about heart attacks enclosed. Ivy Tea Rose Inc. is sponsoring live Zumba Classes throughout the day.

Come out to learn more about heart disease prevention. The event will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2013 from 10 am to 2 pm. Location: Barnett Park, W. Colonial Drive, Orlando, Florida.

Women’s Summit 2013

i Aug 14th No Comments by

They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.” Jeremiah 17:8 (New Living Translation 2007)

As nurturers, women are always doing things for others. We are constantly taking care of our husbands, kids and parents. We join committees at church, sororities and other community-based organizations. We do all of this while holding a job. We are so accustomed to doing for everyone else that we don’t think about letting the work bother us. Well, it’s time that we take a step back and re-fuel ourselves so that our leaves can stay green!

If you are looking to nourish your mind, body and soul, we invite you to attend Nu Iota Omega Chapter’s women-inspired summit on Saturday, September 14, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sheraton Orlando Downtown Hotel. A full buffet breakfast will be served to get your body and mind prepared to receive a wealth of information about enriching yourself.

The summit will connect you with experts who will show you how to achieve your goals and rejuvenate yourself. This expert panel moderated by Star 94.5 FM radio personality Monica May, will include a life coach who will help you organize and relieve stress, an expert on building your “brand” and taking a leadership approach in your life, a member of a running group that focuses on teaching women to become healthier, a political mover from the League of Women Voters to discuss the importance of voicing your opinions through your vote.

In addition to the expert panelists, Kellie Wells, an American track and field athlete who won an Olympic bronze medal at the 2012 London Games, will be the keynote speaker discussing how she overcame challenges and obstacles in her life to become an Olympic medalist.

The following women are experts in their fields and are in the business of helping others.

  • Michelle Fillmore – Lead Ambassador for Central Florida Black Girls Run Chapter
  • Denise Mose, Ph.D. – Entrepreneur, Author, Beauty Connoisseur
  • Cheryl McDuffie James – Managing Director, Business Imaging
  • Carol Davis – Second Vice President, League of Women Voters
  • Kaye-Ann Taylor, Ed.D., RD, LDN – Owner, Nutrition & Exercise “Works”
