Soror of the Year 2015

Chandra Head ShotSoror Chandra Waters has been a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. since 1993. She has been a member of Nu Iota Omega since 2000. In 2014, Soror Chandra stepped out on faith and ran for Basileus of our chapter. Her goal for her two year term was to foster true sisterhood within our chapter and be warm and inviting for inactive members.

In January 2015, Soror Chandra began a new AKA chapter in her life as Basileus and hit the ground running. She stepped immediately into the planning as one of the host chapters for the South Atlantic Regional Conference. This involved attending numerous meetings, phone calls, last minute budget planning and making sure our chapter sorors were ready to host Sorors from Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

While we were preparing for our regional conference, she also had to make sure sorors helped plan and supported our major fundraiser, the Kentucky Derby Soiree, which was held in May. This was a quick turnaround from our regional conference. She was an integral part of the planning to ensure a successful event to raise money for scholarships for our non-profit, Ivy Tea Rose, Inc.

While planning for Regional Conference and for the Kentucky Derby Soiree, Soror Chandra found a way to honor Mother/Daughter Legacies, Celebrating Our Legacies, in our chapter. Soror Chandra secretly contacted the Soror Mother’s and asked them to write a letter to their Soror Daughter. Soror Chandra handcrafted beautifully decorated storyboards with the letter and personal pictures attached to the board. To everyone’s surprise, she presented the gift to the legacies at the May chapter meeting. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room that day.

Soror Chandra led our chapter meetings with grace and with purpose. In 2015, she made sure that Sorors recited the pledge before we started our chapter meeting in order to set the “tone” of the meeting. She made a concerted effort to make sure all Sorors knew they were honored and were worthy of being a woman. Also, Soror Chandra wanted Sorors to know they were appreciated and needed in our chapter. On occasion, she would offer each Soror little quotes or little trinkets with words of wisdom and encouragement.

Soror Chandra is a woman who has allowed God to guide her in all she does for AKA. She has attended and reported on conferences, led our chapter meetings with grace and created an atmosphere with a spirit of sisterly love, warmth and compassion within the chapter.
